"It hit the earth with a quiet thud. She pulled off her gloves and gloves and looked at them. They were no longer white. She dropped them into the whole and picked up the shovel again. She filled up the hole. The sun was hot and the only place there was shade was beneath the trees. The woman was standing beneath the trees. She was forty-one and tired" (otsuka,12). This part of the book sets a different type of mood since the beginning of the book. I mean that because the author was setting a more uplifted mood in order to have full affect when sad things happen. She is preparing the reader for the worst.
